At least 333 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa alone in 2010, an increase of over 2561% since 2007. Around 400 or more rhinos were massacred worldwide last year. Before we are even half way through 2011, the toll is already rapidly closing in on 200 rhinos poached internationally. The numbers are staggering and this act of genocide is hurling all five of our planet's rhino species toward extinction. Some are now only hanging on by a thread. They are brutally killed solely for their horn. Chainsaws, machetes, and hacksaws are all used to cut the horn off their faces. The demand for this body part comes from Asia, and primarily from China and Vietnam. There, it is ground up to make traditional medicines that are used to treat a variety of ailments, from fevers to boils and even devil possession. Contrary to a popular belief, one of the few things rhino horn is not used for is sex drive. The horn is made of keratin, the same essence that makes up our own hair and fingernails. Despite scientific studies that have proven rhino horn to be void of medicinal and curative properties, consumers continue to use this illegal substance. RHINO HORN IS NOT MEDICINE. Organized crime syndicates have commercialized the black market rhino horn trade and are wiping out these animals at an average rate of about one per day.
