Thousands of opposition activists held protests in Tunisia on Monday against the Islamist-led government and to denounce political violence. The protests took place on the eve of the anniversary of Tunisia's first free elections. More than 2000 people gathered in central Tunis shouting anti-government slogans and carrying anti-government banners. There has been much tension in the national assembly and the promised new constitution has still not been delivered. "It would be in the interests of the people if political forces competed among themselves, but what we've seen is a threat and therefore, people will be the first losers", said Muhammad al-Abed, a protester. The protest also followed the death on Thursday of a Call of Tunisia movement official in the southern town of Tataouine during clashes with supporters of the ruling Islamists.
