Chicago has seen it's share of gangland shootouts and there have been daylight mob hits on the busiest of Chicago's streets. Anthony Lombardo head of the Union Siciliano and reporter Jack Lingle were both gunned dow in the loop. But the attempted hit that took place on August 10th 1926 set a new standard for brazeness as a gun battle erupted on Michigan Ave. in the heart of the downtown area. The beer wars were in full swing as Hymie Weiss was pressing his campaign to eliminate Capone. The year started off with a bang with a tommy gun attack on a crowd of people in front of the Pony Inn in Cicero that killed a States Attorney Bill Mc Swiggin. Two of Capone's bodyguards were kidnapped forced to reveal information and killed. A chef at a restaurant where Capone was killed when he refused to poisen Al. Things got so heated Capone went to Michigan for the early summer. He came back in August and dispatched a hit team to get Weiss. On the morning of the 10th Weiss and another gangster Vincent Drucci were about to enter the Standard Oil Building at 910 S. Michigan for a meeting with a city official. As they walked up to the building four men got out of a car and began shooting. The northsiders took cover and returned fire as innocent citizens dove for cover. Quick response by the police kept the gunfight brief and even though some 30 shots were exchanged no one was seriously injured.
