An alleged crime boss is shot and wounded in central Sofia on his way to court. Full story: Convicted Bulgarian crime boss "The Beret" was shot and wounded as he entered a court in central Sofia on Tuesday. The 44-year-old Zlatomir Ivanov was shot four times in his legs, arm and stomach. He was attending court to appeal his conviction for running a drug trafficking gang. His bodyguard was also wounded, and both were taken to a hospital. Local media says his nickname is from the crime boss' time as a member of a special police force known as "The Berets." Ivanov has been allowed to remain under house arrest while awaiting his appeal due to health problems. Bulgaria is the European Union's poorest member. The country has had longstanding problems with corruption and organized crime. Brussels has been pushing the country to tackle the problems. However, Prime Minister Boiko Borisov's has done little to punish corrupt officials and crime bosses since his GERB party swept to power in 2009, and a struggling economy may have continued to encourage crime.
