Soapy Smith Night, 2007 at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. This is a yearly event celebrating the life and death of the King of the Frontier Con Men--Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith. Soapy was the first true organized crime figure in America, having run the towns of Denver and Creede, Colorado with a gang of 100 con men, and with the "fix" in for the politicians and police. He later ran the town of Skagway, Alaska at the height of the Alaskan Gold Rush. He was killed in a gunfight when he went single-handedly to face 100 men of a rival group on July 8, 1898. No one was ever better or more successful with the Shell Game and the Soap Prize Swindle. The money raised from this event is for the Vernon Fund, a charity run for magicians in financial or medical need.
