The final stage of the trial of Movsum Samedov the Chairman of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan, and six other party members started in the Court of Grave Crimes chaired by Eldar Ismailov. Public prosecutor, Vugar Guliyev, said today the Islamic Party's (IPA) leader Samedov distorted the essence of Islam and used it to call for violent actions and the construction of an Islamic state. In particular, he pointed to Samedov's speech at the meeting of the IPA General Council on January 2 this year, where he called for 'jihad.' In addition, he accused Samedov of promoting sectarian strife and hatred. During the prosecutor's speech the defendants repeatedly chanted slogans of 'Allah Akbar' and a curse to the prosecutor and the judge. When the prosecutor read out the indictment of Ruhullah Akhundzadeh, he accused the prosecutor of lying. As a result, the prosecutor asked the court to sentence Samedov, his deputy Vagif Abdullayev, the head of the Astara organization of IPA Akhundzadeh and the activist Faramaza Abbasova to 12 years in prison. He asked to sentence Dayanat Samedov and Firdovsi Mamedrzayev (relatives of Samedov) to 11 years in prison.
