It has an area of approximately 176000 km2 (68000 square miles) excluding territorial waters. The most densely populated city is Montevideo, the capital city, which has the most important port. Punta del Este, on the Atlantic coast and 130 kilometers from Montevideo, is one of the most popular bathing resorts in South America, highly active during the Summer season (January and February).
