I'd learned to take a lot of precautions in NYC, such as never to stand in your window and be seen, never to let people see what you were taking in or getting rid of, preparing all the trash and shredding any documents, never answering the phone, never letting your schedule or details be known, etc. I was also sneaky with bank transactions -- I kept a lot of things done in cash and had pretty good basic security on my modest apartments.
