March 2008- Channel 9 news Gangland murder suspect and Melbourne underworld figure Mick Gatto says police should charge him over two underworld murders or back off. Mr Gatto said police were yet to produce any evidence he had been involved in the murder of crime figures Victor Peirce and Frank Benvenuto. "If they're going to come and arrest me, come out and do it," he said. "I'll come up trumps, I promise you." Mr Gatto accused the anti-gangland Purana Taskforce of "putting the squeeze" on two suspects in the Peirce killings to implicate him. He said one of the men, who has been in custody for months, had been made a series of offers to name him as involved. "It's just wrong. They shouldn't be allowed to do it," he said. "There's been an agenda with me for a long time. "It's why they're squeezing these blokes. "Go out and get evidence." Court documents revealed in March this year outlined an informer's allegations that Mr Gatto ordered the death of Benvenuto and helped set-up the Peirce slaying. The crane company operator said the police theory was that he had wanted Peirce dead before he took revenge over the May, 2000, death of Benvenuto, Peirce's former friend and boss. Mr Benvenuto's brother Vince, 55, remains on remand after on Monday being charged with the murder of Peirce, at Port Melbourne in May, 2002.
