The game adheres to classic Noir film and writing archetypes and plays up to the greatly. While some of the dialogue and scenes lead you to believe they didn't take the concept too seriously, most of the action portions of the game can be scene as an homage to Hong Kong action films and gritty 70s style Mafia films. The blend along with the new (at the time) bullet-time tech made for a great end-user experience. The graphics have dated over the past decade, but the mechanics and although sometimes cheap difficulty still make for a fun game today.
