We walked the ten or so blocks into downtown from our hotel and, as has been our custom, walked into a sign of the continuing political unrest in the country. Thousands of demonstrators marched in an organized strike against labor practices of the government. Signs and sticks were in evidence, along with megaphones and chants. The downtown was gridlocked, with all traffic being diverted from the central core of the city, Peru's second largest. With the need to get to the airport for our flight back to Lima for the trip home, we took a lot of photos of the protest, then headed back to the hotel. Along with the potential for travel difficulties due to the strike, we were also unable to check in at the airlines office for the Arequipa-Lima flight for some reason. So, instead of waiting for our ride to the airport to show up at 2 PM for the 3 PM flight, we grabbed a cab shortly after noon and headed to the airport. Strike or not, airplanes were still flying, so we made it to Lima by 4:30 PM.
