From what I understand (from residents) at least in Fukuoka, the Yakuza have earned a lot of respect and admiration from the people. They're more known as keepers of the peace than anything else

We have one here in the states that dates back to the 80s called Cobra Kai. They don't use weapons...they just sweep the leg. The best defense against them is a crane kick.

@darksidepvp probably true. After the 1995 earthquake here in kobe, the Yamaguchi gumi reacted much after than the government. they supplied food, blankets, clothes and even cash to those in need.

Is it true that when the tsunami hit Japan, the Yakuza were one of the first to respond by sending out trucks with supplies to the hardest hit and remote areas affected? I remember the BBC posting a story about it but wasn't sure if it was true or not.
