In future, we are planning to develop a program in Agriculture and Medicine. Given the large inputs required, this is a step that must be prepared for carefully. But we do believe that this field could make an important contribution to the development of Kyrgyzstan, and thus is worth the effort it will take. The team that runs IUCA was instrumental in the foundation of the American University in Central Asia. This team includes the original founder of AUCA, Camilla Sharshekeeva, and its first President, John Clark. Much of the faculty is also from those who were present in the early years of AUCA. AUCA is now an established institution, thus its founders, seeking new challenges, decided to work on a new institution that would embody the principles of the original AUCA, but break some new ground as well. While the original was in Bishkek, IUCA is in Tokmok, a city of 70000 that is 60 km. east of the capital. The students that we expect to educate are more likely to be from rural areas or be-ethnic minorities. Thus we are reaching out to people who could not get a Western-style education before. Tokmok itself was the kind of town that no one thought much of. In Soviet times it was a secret military town with a big air base. It was also thought to be full of people with connections to organized crime. The Mayor of the city and the Governor of Chuy Oblast are now enthusiastically supporting a plan to establish Tokmok as a university city - to be what Dubna is to Moscow or Ann ...
