21-year Zhou Yan's body lied limp on her father's lap. She was hit twice and killed by a driver in eastern Jiangxi province last Wednesday (Feb 13). Her cousin, Huang Zekai, saw the accident happen. He says the driver hit her once then saw that she was still alive, backed up, and hit her again. Huang told Radio Free Asia the driver probably did this to avoid paying for Zhou's medical treatment. He also believes that the driver was part of an organized crime ring. Huang fears that the driver's connections to the police may hinder a fair investigation. Already the police have denied to interview key witnesses. The family is neither rich nor well connected. Huang says he fears that their case will not be taken seriously. Similar incidents have happened across China where rich or well-connected people are above the law. The most famous case is of the son of a district Deputy Police Chief, Li Gang. The youth ran over and killed a female student in 2010. He was given a prison sentence of only six years.
