These unwed mothers were hidden in mother baby homes and in many of these religious institutions one of the conditions was that they had to give up their baby in order to be admitted into these private homes, others were manipulated into signing adoption papers while others - such as in the case of the Souersde Misericordie (Sisters of Mercy) the women were drugged during birth and simply told their baby was born dead. The Catholic Church along with the other religious institutions started to build more and more unwed mothers homes, hospitals and built an empire in Canada, US and abroad off of this child trafficking scheme. To date many adoptees have thought that their mothers did not 'want them' and have not realized that in fact, they were stolen babies.
