November 27th 2008 Channel 9 news- A man charged with murdering crime figure Victor Peirce has been ordered to stand trial in the Victorian Supreme Court. Vince Benvenuto, 55, who pleaded not guilty today, is accused of having set up a meeting with Peirce in Port Melbourne in May 2002 where he was shot dead. Melbourne Magistrates Court heard this week that accused hitman Andrew `Benji' Veniamin shot Peirce as he sat in a car. It was also alleged that underworld identity Mick Gatto and Benvenuto's brother Joe had played a part in arranging the fatal meeting. Mr Gatto has denied any involvement in Peirce's death. Magistrate Carmen Randazzo, despite acknowledging it was not a strong circumstantial case, today ruled after a contested committal hearing this week there is sufficient evidence for a jury to convict Benvenuto. Ms Randazzo said her role was only to determine that test. Benvenuto, who is in custody, was remanded to appear next month in the Supreme Court.
