Apple-LogoJune 26, 2012 - Washington D.C. -  Today, the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA), along with six other organizations, issued a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of Apple, Tim Cook, voicing our concerns regarding the incident of discrimination, as asserted by the customer, that took place at the Apple Store in Georgia on June 14, 2012.  In the letter, PAAIA and its fellow co-signers, call on Apple to cease any instances of discrimination against Iranian Americans and to issue an apology to any customers impacted by their employees' behavior.

PAAIA has a zero tolerance policy against discrimination or racial profiling of Iranian Americans. As we have done before, we will speak out and defend our community's interests under such circumstances and take all necessary steps and actions.

"As we note in our letter to Apple, any instance of discrimination against an Iranian American is, simply, unacceptable," said Saghi Modjtabai, PAAIA's Executive Director.  "Apple would be well-served to train its employees on properly applying its policies but also ensuring that none of its employees are, knowingly or unknowingly, involved in an act of discrimination based on a customer's background or language."

The letter also strongly encourages Apple to implement uniform practices that would apply to every customer regardless of whether they are from a country on the US embargo list. This would protect both Apple and its customers against any claims of discrimination.

"Though we are pleased that we have made our concerns known to Apple," Modjtabai added, "it is important that we continue to place a spotlight on this issue and the broader issue of the impact of sanctions on our community, creating greater awareness by policymakers and our own community."

PAAIA will continue to follow this issue and other incidents that impact the welfare of our community and will take appropriate action as needed.
